This annual prize aims to help chamber music ensembles on the cusp of their professional careers. It was named after Barbara Fritz, founder and benefactor of the Emerging Artists Fund of the Berkeley Piano Club. She was a professional vocalist who understood the needs and difficulties faced by young musicians making their way into the professional music world.
The $3000 cash award is given to a Bay Area chamber music ensemble of 3-6 members whose average age is under 35 years. The winners are presented in a concert at the Berkeley Piano Club, a century-old venue ideal for chamber music.
Past winners have included the Curium Piano Trio, Capitoline Trio, Thalea String Quartet, Delphi Trio, Friction Quartet, Aleron Trio, and the Mobius Trio. The 2018 winner's concert will be held on Jan.13, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. at the Berkeley Piano Club.
